Jayalalithaa case: Karnataka gets Supreme Court order
By B.S. Ramesh
BANGALORE,
FEB. 25.
The Karnataka Government has received the Supreme Court order transferring the disproportionate wealth case against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to the State.
Sources in the Government told The Hindu on Wednesday that the order was received after the Supreme Court rejected on February 17 a petition filed by Ms. Jayalalithaa.
The groundwork for holding a free and fair trial had been completed. The Karnataka Government had completed all formalities barring the appointment of a prosecutor for setting up the Special Court. The Government was preparing a list of prosecutors. The prosecutor would be appointed in consultation with the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
Setting at rest speculation relating to the venue, the sources said the trial would be held on the premises of the District and Sessions Court. This venue was chosen because it was centrally located.
The trial was expected to begin soon after the documents in Tamil were translated into English and made available to Karnataka.
The Judge had been appointed. A host of other facilities, including staff and equipment, too had been provided.
