MACHILIPATNAM, FEB. 25. S. Ravi Kumar, Director of Adult Education, here on Wednesday announced that Krishna district had secured the third place at State-level in the effective implementation of literacy programme. He said that 180-lakh illiterates were identified in Andhra Pradesh out of which, 78 lakh became literate by the end of 2003. He said steps were being taken to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the State by 2005. Mr. Kumar said honorarium had been enhanced from Rs. 500 to Rs. 750 per month for moderators of the literacy programme and pointed out that 700 computers were given to adult-education centres in the State. He said the university Vice-Chancellors in Andhra Pradesh were requested to direct all the NSS units in various colleges to cooperate with the Department of Adult Education for effective implementation of the programme. He also advised the NGOs and other service-organisations to cooperate with the department and also appealed to the media to highlight the achievements of literacy programme. C. Prasanna Ratna Kumar, Deputy Director of Adult Education and Akshara Krishna, said that Kodur, Vuyyur and Ghantasala mandals had achieved 100 per cent literacy in Krishna district. Earlier Dr. Ravi Kumar reviewed the adult education and Akshara Krishna programme. He instructed the mandal literacy officers to implement the programme effectively. T. Gopal Reddy, Deputy Director, Adult Education, Guntur district, T. Srirama Murthy, Assistant Project Officer `Sarvasiksha Abhiyan', B. Upendra Kumar, Kumari D. Rajarajeswari, K. Hrudayaraju, assistant project officers of Akshara Krishna, were present.
