BEIJING, FEB. 25. Chinese experts have achieved a breakthrough by completing the genetic mapping of the killer H5N1 bird flu virus and are looking at how the virus mutates, the state media reported today. The breakthrough will help scientists understand how the virus evolves, Xin Chao'an, a leading professor at the lab and a member of the national avian flu team of experts was quoted as saying by Guangzhou-based Nanfang daily. The mapping result was achieved by an avian disease research lab at the South China Agricultural University, in Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong, one of the worst hit areas by the outbreak in the country. Bird flu has spread to 16 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities resulting in the culling of over two million poultry. No human infection has been reported.
