Madurai
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, FEB. 25 . The Corporation Council meeting today witnessed heated exchanges among different parties and officials. While members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and both the Communist parties walked out on different issues, the independent member, `Misa' M. Pandiyan, threatened to resign if long pending works in his ward were not carried out. The furore started when the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, S. Mahalingam, complained that the Government was neglecting Madurai, while it had announced huge sops for the Chennai Corporation. All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members objected, saying there was no new scheme for which the Corporation had sought assistance. The CPI (M) members staged a walk out condemning the ``atrocity of the AIADMK members, who prevented them from speaking". Responding to questions raised by the members, the Corporation Commissioner, A. Karthik, said the local body was planning to conduct a Lok Adalat for settling cases of taxation pending before courts. He agreed to provide new drinking water connections for nearly 3000 domestic users. The toll collection on the ring road had increased by Rs.20,000, ever since private buses were asked to terminate at the Palanganatham bus stand, as more government buses had started using the road, he said. Earlier, DMK members and the CPI (M) councillor, M. Saravanan, walked out, protesting the non-implementation of the resolution passed by the council last month, to simplify procedures for name transfer in the payment of property tax.
