Indian Bank topples S. Railway

CHENNAI, FEB. 25. Thanks to a brilliant effort by International Master G.B. Prakash, Indian Bank toppled joint leader of the previous round Southern Railway in the fifth round of the 14th Tamil Nadu State team chess championship at Nehru Stadium this evening.

Integral Coach Factory holds a slender half-point lead over Indian Bank and Southern Railway who are in joint second place.

With two more rounds left, ICF leads with 14.5 points. The final round in this event will be on Friday. This event is organised by Saranya Chess Centre.

On the second table, ICF and Chennai District seniors were locked in a 2-2 draw.On the top two boards, the players with the white pieces won, R.R. Laxman for Chennai and State champion K. Gunasekaran for the ICF. The other two games were drawn.The three lower boards in the Indian Bank-Railways match ended in drawn games. But on the top board International Master G.B. Prakash played like a man possessed, taking risks and brilliantly engineering the collapse of Railway's B.T. Muralikrishnan.

The results (fifth round): Southern Railway 14 lost 1.5-2.5 to Indian Bank 14; Chennai Seniors 13 drew with 2-2 ICF 14.5; Mount Chess Academy 12.5 bt 2.5-1.5 Kanchi 11.5; Chennai Juniors 11 lost 1.5-2.5 to Salem 12.5; Bloom Chess Academy 11 drew with 2-2 Thuthookudi 11; Madurai 9 lost 0.5-3.5 to Coimbatore 12; Income Tax 10.5 bt 2.5-1.5 Jamalia Chess Academy `C' 9.5; Chettinad `A' 7.5 lost 0.5-3.5 to Kiruba Chess Academy 11.5; Thiruvallur 7 lost 1-3 to Chennai Kids 9.5; Capa Chess Academy 7.5 drew with 2-2 Sivagangai 8.5; Jamalia Chess Academy `A' 9 bt 4-0 Chettinad `B' 2.5; Aaron Chess Academy 5.5 drew with 2-2 Jamalia Chess Academy `B' 5.5.
