Plea to Government on Kuriarkutty project

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, FEB. 26. The District Congress Committee (DCC) president, V.S. Vijayaraghavan, has urged the State Government to reconsider its decision to drop the Kuriarkutty-Karappara multi-purpose project. The project would have solved the acute water problem of Chittur taluk and produced 198 million units of electricity, he said.

In a statement here today Mr. Vijayaraghavan described the decision to drop this project as `most unfortunate.'

He urged the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, and the Electricity Minister, K. Muraleedharan, to take steps to implement the project.

The DCC president said that an amount of Rs.100 crores was allotted for the project when Mr. Antony was the Chief Minister during 1995. But the LDF Government that succeeded him did not pursue the project.

At the fag end of the LDF Government's term on March 16, 2001 the Central Government asked the State Government to submit a revised proposal for Central forest and environment clearance. But the Government had not bothered to reply to the Central Government's direction, the statement said.
