Cashew workers plan strike on March 9

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, FEB. 26. Alleging that the UDF Government had betrayed the cashew workers, the pro-AITUC Kerala Cashew Workers Central Council (KCWCC), will strike work on March 9 and hold protest demonstrations in front of the village offices in the district on that day.

At a press conference here today, the working president of the KCWCC, N. Anirudhan, said that as a prelude to the demonstration, the council would engage in an ad hoc awareness campaign at cashew factories from March 1 to 6.

He said that the failure on the part of the UDF Government to open and run the public sector cashew factories as model employers has resulted in the cashew workers and the industry encountering an unprecedented crisis.

As a result exploitation of the cashew workers by the private sector employers have become quite rampant. The employees are being denied their justified rights and benefits such as DA, maternity leave, ESI and PF. The public sector factories lying closed have only helped in the escalation of such exploitation, he said.
