IUML to field E. Ahmed, K.P.A. Majeed

By Our Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE, FEB. 26. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to field E. Ahmed from Ponnani and K.P.A. Majeed from Manjeri in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

A business tycoon and recent entrant to the League, P.A. Abdul Wahab, would be the party's candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant following the demise of the party State general secretary, Korambayil Ahmed Haji.

The party candidates were announced by the State president, Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal, at a press conference at his residence in Panakkad in Malappuram district today.

Mr. Ahmed's choice was a foregone conclusion amid reports that he would contest to the Lok Sabha from Ponnani and not from Manjeri, from where he had posted a spectacular win in the last general election.

Missing from the League's list is its national president, G.M. Banatwala, who had won from Ponnani last time.

Mr. Majeed is a frontline IUML leader and a former MLA, and Mr. Ahmed is a former Industries Minister and now the general secretary of the party. Majority of voters in the two constituencies are Muslims and League candidates had won elections from here with a thumbing majority in the past.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) had already announced its candidates for both seats. In Ponnani, P.P. Suneer of the CPI and in Manjeri, T.K. Hamsa, former Public Works Minister and CPI(M) leader, will take on the League stalwarts.
