State weavers awards announced

Thiruvananthapuram Feb. 26. The awards for the master craftsmen in the handloom sector instituted by the State Government under the "Promotion of exquisite handloom cloth as work of art" programme have been announced.

The awards were announced by the Principal Secretary, Industries, John Mathai here today. The first prize in the sari section was won by K. Rajendran of Balaramapuram while the second prize went to A. Mohanan of Balaramapuram; K. Ganesan of Palakkad won the third prize.

In the dress material category, S.P. Babu of Kidarakkuzhi in Thiruvananthapuram won the first prize while K. K. Manikantan of Palakkad won the second prize. In the furnishing category, M. Kannan of Payyoli bagged the first prize while Muthar Balan of Kannur got the second prize. The winners would be presented a purse of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs.5,000 at a function to be held in Kozhikode in the first week of April.
