Tackling indiscipline

Sir, — I refer to the news item, "Indiscipline will not be tolerated, says Sonia" (Feb. 27). Sonia Gandhi, no doubt, is right in feeling that it will be better for Najma Heptullah to leave the party than indulge in indiscipline. But discipline should not be enforced selectively. Her tolerance of K. Karunakaran, even in the face of his readiness to rock the boat in Kerala, is a case in point. Instead of acting against him, she rewarded him by giving his son a ministerial berth.

R. Muralikumar,
Chennai

Sir, — Indiscipline, dissidence and nepotism are nothing new to the Congress. The leadership, instead of punishing the guilty, usually rolls out the red carpet. K. Muraleedharan's is a classic example.

K.P. Ashok Kumar,
Thiruvananthapuram

Sir, — Ms. Heptullah should remember the days when she could not get elected even as the Maharastra Pradesh Congress leader.

The party elevated her to prominence. But the politician she is, she perhaps wants to hold on to her post tenaciously, even if it means shifting loyalties and losing credibility.

Subramaniam Sankaran,
Chennai
