`Effect of Raman'

Sir, — On February 28, 1928, India was put on the scientific map of the world. That was the day the great scientist, C.V. Raman, discovered the Raman effect. The Nobel laureate's (he was given the prize in 1930) sense of humour was well known. During a party hosted in his honour, he was offered alcoholic drinks. He declined them saying, "You can see the effect of Raman on alcohol but not the effect of alcohol on Raman."

R. Rajagopalan,
Chennai
