KOLLAM, FEB. 27. After being denied a proper supply of water for more than two weeks, the tusker, Ayyappan, was today provided with a lavish supply of water to drink and have a cool shower. Ayyappan had developed musth on February 9. He had run amok and even attacked his mahout. After being administered with a tranquiliser shot, the tusker was tethered to a tree and ignored. Animal lovers had expressed concern over his plight since the elephant had been denied proper supply of food and water over the days. The development was also highlighted by the media following which the District Collector and the Forest Department intervened and came to the rescue of the tusker. This morning Ayyappan was provided with a good meal of watermelons and the Kollam City Corporation dispatched a tanker load of water for him. The tusker appeared much relieved after the shower which came after a lapse of two weeks. The Corporation authorities have also agreed to give a regular supply of water for Ayyappan. An elephant in musth will have to remain tethered at the same spot for more than 90 days.
