Mufti escapes bid on life

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR, FEB. 27. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, today escaped an assassination bid at a public meeting in Beerwah, about 60 km from here. A girl was killed and eight were injured in the attack. The mufti was whisked away by his bodyguards.

As the Revenue Minister, Hakim Mohammad Yasin, was addressing a 5,000-strong crowd, militants hurled two grenades and they exploded 100 metres from the podium, injuring nine persons, including four jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force. The injured were taken to hospital but one of them, Sameera, 16, died on the way. The condition of two CRPF jawans is stated to be critical.

Chaos prevailed at the meeting as people ran helter-skelter. The police and paramilitary force personnel retaliated by opening fire in the air.

It took some time for the people to come to terms with the situation and they came back to listen to the Mufti, who had returned by then. "Mufti saheb kadam badao hum tumharey saath hain (Mufti you go ahead we are with you)" they shouted. Mr. Yasin and the Minister of State for Haj and Auqaf, Sarfraz Khan, too escaped unhurt.

The Mufti asked the militants to shun violence. "They [militants] should take a cue from the reaction of the people; those who have taken to arms should see what the people want. They want an end to the violence and bloodshed ... They want development," he said, adding, "after seeing your determination and courage, I am sure the peace process will succeed."

The Mufti reiterated that he would not be cowed down by such acts and would continue to strive for peace with dignity in the State.
