Ex-panchayat official sentenced for graft
THRISSUR,
FEB. 27.
A lower court sentenced a former grama panchayat secretary of Kurichykottayam to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 for diverting funds meant for repairing a public tank.
Though the Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge, Thrissur, M.V. Viswanathan, yesterday sentenced K.S. Valsamma to one year's simple imprisonment on two counts, she would be jailed only for a year as the sentences would run concurrently.
According to the prosecution, during 1990-91, the first accused Valsamma diverted Rs. 55,653 while repairing Chelachira public tank.
The court had acquitted the second accused, M.S. Soman, panchyat president; and the third accused, Santhosh Kumar, engineer. The case was investigated by the Vigilance Deputy SP, K.J. Devassy.--UNI
