Jammu & Kashmir
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR, FEB. 28. The Jammu and Kashmir Government will take up with the Centre the issue of allowing the Kashmiri expatriate, Ayyub Thakur, who is suffering from cancer, to visit his hometown in south Kashmir. This assurance was given by the Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, to senior National Conference leader, Mehboob Beig, in the Assembly on Friday. Dr. Beig drew the attention of the members to the issue and said, "despite ideological difference with him (Dr. Thakur) I want to say that he is suffering from lung cancer and has desired that he be allowed to visit his hometown. This is his last wish and I urge the Government to take up this matter with the Central Government."Mr. Sharma in his reply said: "we all know his background, but still I will request the Chief Minister to take up this matter with the Centre to fulfil his last wish." Dr. Thakur, is one of the prominent Kashmiri separatists outside Kashmir and heads the London-based World Kashmir Freedom Movement. A Jamat-e-Islami ideologue, he has left his hometown Shopian in late Eighties and is settled with his family in London.
