Develop new scientific gadgets, students told

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 28 . The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has said that students coming out with new scientific inventions would be suitably rewarded by the Administration.

Distributing cash prizes to students who had notched the top positions in science and other related subjects in the school final and Plus Two examinations during 2002-2003 and declaring open a science exhibition as a mark of celebration of National Science Day on the premises of the Government Girls HSS at Kadirkamam near here today, he said that students should develop self-confidence and perseverance to develop new scientific gadgets. He also paid rich tributes to Sir C. V. Raman.

The Chief Secretary, R. Padmanabhan, who presided said that the two-day exhibition carried information and highlights of various latest inventions such as Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics and Astronomy. He said that the exhibits of panels now on display should be scanned and displayed in schools in rural areas with details of the highlights of the gadgets in Tamil.

He said that a batch of five government school teachers were trained to intensify scientific knowledge of the students.

Senior research scientist and former Head of the Radio Astronomy Centre, Ooty, V. Balasubramanian, said that the contribution of Sir C V Raman was the first major discovery by an Indian scientist.

Senior professor and observatory director of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics in the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Pune, S. Ananthakrishnan, spoke.

The secretary to the Department of Science and Technology (the sponsor of the exhibition) of Pondicherry Administration, K. Narsimha, said that the department would soon procure a Rs 15- lakh unit for `Science on wheels' project.
