Nithyaesh, Megha corner glory

Tamil Nadu's Nithyaesh Nataraj and Andhra Pradesh's Panuganti Megha, the under-18 boys' and girls' champions.

KOCHI, FEB. 28. Tamil Nadu's Nithyaesh Nataraj and Andhra Pradesh's Panuganti Megha bagged the biggest titles of their budding career at the AITA Junior Tour KRL all-India ranking tennis tournament, which concluded at the Ambalamugal KRL courts here on Saturday evening.

The sixth-seeded Nithyaesh, a 10th standard student of St Michael's Academy in Chennai, staved off a late challenge from second-seeded Gurusher Harika (Chandigarh) 6-2, 6-4 in the under-18 boys' final, while the unseeded Megha defeated the promising 13-year-old Shahin Ansari in the under-18 girls' clash. Both the champions were returning to the junior national circuit after a long break, Nithyaesh after an injury and Megha after her 12th standard exams. There was double joy for Nithyaesh as he won the doubles title, with Mangal Sriram.

While the senior section was ridden with upsets, there were no surprises in the under-14 category with topseed Sriram Balaji of Coimbatore and Mumbai's Supriya Mallaya taking the boys' and girls' titles without much fuss.

Nithyaesh, who had jolted the topseed Hariprasath yesterday, was in fine nick today, dominating the final against Gurusher with solid groundstrokes. He also varied the pace and length of his strokes smartly and produced some shrewd drop shots. The Chennai lad raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set and in the second, he was up 3-0 before Gurusher fought back. The set was close at 4-3 and 5-4, but Nithyaesh hung on to claim the top prize.

Mr Anto Varkey, GM (Projects), Kochi Refineries Limited, gave away the prizes.
