`Phone-tapping': Krishna orders verification

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, FEB. 28. The Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has taken seriously the alleged tapping of his telephones, and of his ministerial colleagues and some Congress functionaries and has directed the officials concerned to verify the facts.

Mr. Krishna, who was in New Delhi to hold talks with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and other senior leaders of the party to finalise the election strategy, on his arrival here today, said: "I have read it in newspapers. It is a serious issue. The whole matter is a bit scary. Please be careful when you speak to me on telephone."

The former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, and the Congress MLC, V.S. Ugrappa, had alleged yesterday that the telephones of the Chief Minister and that of several Congress leaders are being tapped at the behest of the Union Government.

Mr. Krishna said that he would talk to the State Advocate-General, A.N. Jayaram, and contemplate taking certain legal steps based on the latter's advice.
