Speed governors: transport operators threaten stir

KOZHIKODE, FEB. 28. Transport operators who have been asked to fit their vehicles with speed governors have warned they would resort to an agitation from March 3 if the Government implemented its order making the equipment compulsory for heavy vehicles.

The order makes it compulsory for lorries, buses and other heavy vehicles to be fitted with speed governors from February 29. A meeting to discuss the issue held here today was attended by bus and lorry owners and trade union leaders.

Representatives of all major trade unions, including the INTUC, CITU, BMS and STU, attended the meeting. The warning is to protest against the decision making it compulsory to install speed governors in vehicles.

The meeting urged the Government to put on hold the decision on speed governors at least till the Supreme Court issued a verdict on an appeal filed by the transport operators. The vehicles owners said that for the past two weeks fresh registration and fitness certificates were not being issued for heavy vehicles that were not fitted with speed governors.

An action committee has been formed to chalk out plans to resist implementation of the Government order. Its representatives would meet the Chief Minister on March 1.
