NEW DELHI, FEB. 28. A report on the dietary intake of street and working children was released by the Delhi Health and Social Welfare Minister, Yoganand Shastri, today. The report titled "Nutritional Status Of Street And Working Children In Delhi'' has been prepared by the non-government organisation "Butterflies''. The study was carried out among children living in the New Delhi railway station, Connaught Place, Kashmere Gate, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Fatehpuri, Kidwai Nagar and Karol Bagh. According to the report, about 49 per cent slum children and 32 per cent street children were found to be underweight. Another significant fact that came into light was that street children who live on their own and don't share their earnings with their families eat better quality food than slum children who stay with their families. Vitamin A deficiency was found in 16 per cent and 14 per cent of slum and street children respectively. Dental hygiene was another cause for concern with 26 per cent slum children and 18 per cent street children suffering from dental problems. The report included the findings on bleeding gums as a result of vitamin C deficiency. The function was attended by former MP, Shashi Bhushan, the Planning Commission Member, G.B. Panda, the UNICEF Programme Officer, Gerry Pinto, and the Butterflies Director, Rita Panicker.
