THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 28 . The Fast Track Court here has sentenced Lalan (33) to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 for murdering a volleyball player, Murali, in the courtyard of his house in Kadakkavur 13 years ago. The judge, U. Sarathchandran, also sentenced Biju (34), Thankuttan (32), Lenin (32), Ajith (34) and Rajith (33) to three months' rigorous imprisonment in the case. Lalan would have to undergo a further period of imprisonment for three years if he defaults on the fine. The judge directed that the fine amount be paid to the victim's mother. The murder was a fallout of a quarrel during a volleyball match held in the compound of the Velivalakom temple in connection with Chathayam day festivities on August 26, 1991. All the convicted persons were members of a volleyball club in Vadasserikkonam. The investigation of the case had been taken over by the Crime Branch after Murali's father gave a representation to the Chief Minister saying that the inquiry by the local police was unsatisfactory. The chargesheet in the case was filed by the Crime Branch Dy. S.P., K.K. Balachandran. Of the 21 prosecution witnesses, four had turned hostile during the trial. S.R. Jayakumar, who is holding charge of the district pleader, appeared for the prosecution.
