DU teachers hold silent demonstration

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 28. Protesting against what they called the "undemocratic'' functioning of the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor, Deepak Nayyar, the Delhi University Teachers' Association held a silent demonstration in front of the New Convocation Hall here today even as the 81st Annual Convocation ceremony was in progress. The protesting teachers were carrying black flags and had even covered their mouth with black cloth.

"We had requisitioned a meeting of the Academic Council. But even now, the meeting has not been called. Also, the recommendations of a committee for ad hoc teachers that had been set up by the Vice-Chancellor himself have not been implemented. Finally, the re-employment criteria should be made transparent,'' said the DUTA treasurer, Sanjay Tyagi. Intensifying their protest against the Vice-Chancellor and to demand the withdrawal of the Model Act, the DUTA has also called for a General Body Meeting on March 3.

"They were mainly raising the issue of re-employment. But there is nothing that is being done wrong in this. The criteria being applied were passed by the Executive Council in 1982. The only thing that has happened now is that the University is following it more strictly,'' said the University Proctor, S. Menon.

While the protest was mainly silent, matters `heated up' outside the gate as a member of the Academic Council, Sadhna Sharma, claimed that she was being stopped from entering the hall without any concrete reason. "I had an invitation card and I am an elected member of the Academic Council. Yet they stopped me. They had no reason. Finally, when I saw that they were allowing everyone, I pushed my way through,'' said Dr. Sharma.
