dated March 1, 1954: Study of Sanskrit

Mr. Mehr Chand Mahajan, Chief Justice of India, speaking at the Madras Sanskrit College, Mylapore, Madras, on February 28 said that Sanskrit should have been our national language because the very foundation of our learning was Vedic Sanskrit. Sanskrit should be made a compulsory second language throughout the length and breadth of the country. Mr.Mahajan was received, on arrival at the college, by Mr. K. Balasubramania Sastri, Principal, and Mr. K. Balasubramania Aiyar, Secretary of the Managing Committee. There was a large and distinguished gathering including Sir S.Varadachariar, former Judge of the Federal Court, Mr. N. Patanjali Sastri, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr. P.V. Rajamannar, Chief Justice, Madras High Court, Mr. Justice Satyanarayana Rao and Mr. Justice Rajagopalan. In his address, Mr. Mahajan said that Sanskrit literature was studied and appreciated not only in this country but also in various parts of the world.
