Letters to the Editor
Sir, Friday's assassination attempt on Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at a public meeting in Beerwah is deplorable and shocking. It clearly shows that a section is opposed to giving peace a chance. One hopes volatility of the situation is not lost on the Hurriyat, which has recently been hinting at pulling out of the proposed talks with the Centre as a protest against the killing of civilians by the security forces in Bandipore. As long as bloodletting by the militants continues, anti-insurgency operations are a necessary evil. Nalini Vijayaraghavan, Thiruvananthapuram * * * Sir, This is not the first time that the Hurriyat has backtracked from the talks. The argument for the decision shows that the Hurriyat is once again playing into the hands of those who do not want to take the peace process to its logical end. Siddhartha Raj Guha, Jabalpur, M.P.
