Letters to the Editor
Sir, The photograph of the 9-year-old Rajen, carrying a load of garbage to earn Rs.20 is heart-rending (Feb. 24). It speaks more than what it conveys at first glance. But I am unable to call this child exploitation when it is a case of extreme poverty forcing the boy to contribute to the family's kitty. S.V. Narayanan, Bangalore * * * Sir, The heart-rending picture shows how and for whom India is shining. Rajen is not a lone victim of this social malady; more than 25 per cent of the population is living in subhuman conditions. This only shows that economic growth alone is not a guarantee for development. Sanjiv Kushwaha, Lucknow
