Congress to contest all Lok Sabha seats

DEHRA DUN, FEB 29. The Congress unit of Uttaranchal state has decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections on all the seats in the state, said the AICC in charge for Uttaranchal state and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijay Singh. Addressing a press conference here today Mr Singh said they have also set up a five-member special screening committee to finalise the names of the prospective candidates who will be authorised by the Congress high command to contest the elections.

The screening committee members include the state Chief Minster, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, state PCC chief Harish Rawat, Digvijay Singh and two senior members from the state PCC Working Committee. Mr Singh however said that the PCC as its emergency meeting held earlier in the day had authorised the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, to take a final decision in respect of the names of the candidates.

Responding to question Mr Singh said they have also set up a committee to prepare the manifesto for the State keeping in view the various aspirations of the people, while countering the failure of the NDA government at the Centre.

Mr Singh strongly criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for spending the tax payers' money. "For political gains they are spending nearly Rs 250 crores on the advertisement campaign launched under the banner of India Shinning.''

He said since Independence of the country no government at the Centre has misused the tax payers' money in such a fashion.

He also criticised the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, for maintaining a silence on the issues of corruption like the Tehelka episode, coffin scandal and the Judev case.
