DINDIGUL, FEB.29. A special forest team arrested 11 persons on a charge of cutting and smuggling rosewood trees from Thonimalai of the Kannaivadi forest range during a surprise raid today. Seven rosewood poles worth Rs.1 lakh were seized from them. Acting on information, the team, led by the Kannivadi Forest Ranger, G. Vadivel, surrounded the gang in the forest when it engaged in cutting the trees. Ramalinga Achari of Batlagundu (35), Murugesan (44) and Rajendran (22) of Periakulam, Arokiam (27), Antony (24) Devsagayam (54) Malaiyan and their accomplices Saravana Kumar of G. Thummalapatti, Muniandi and Pandi of Kannivadi and Murugapandi, of Oddanchatram were arrested. The police are searching Vijayamurthy and Murthy. The Kannivadi police have registered a case under the Tamil Nadu Rosewood Trees (conservation) Act, 1994. The arrested were remanded in custody.
