Ombudsman visits waste treatment facility

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 29. The Ombudsman for Local Self Government, K. P. Radhakrishna Menon, visited an organic waste treatment facility at Changampuzha Nagar, South Kalamassery, on Sunday.

The visit was on the occasion of the first harvest of the organically processed manure from waste collected in the residential area.

Efforts to free the Changampuzha Nagar and other localities in the Kalamassery municipality are from garbage had begun way back in 1998. On the Republic Day this year, Changampuzha Nagar was pronounced `clean' by the Municipal chairman, Jamal Manakkadan.

The organic waste treatment facility is located on the premises of the office of the Changampuzha Nagar Residents' Association and is based on the aerobic bacterial composting technology.

The composting facility was inaugurated on February 8 and on Sunday the first harvest of the manure was made.

Using the bio-trigger mechanism, the composting process is speeded up.

The normal time of 45 to 60 days to turn organic waste into organic manure has been reduced to about 20 days using the bio-trigger mechanism.
