Check pollution

Sir, — The pollution caused by a tiles factory at Ashwath Nagar has become alarmingly high.

A year ago, the factory started manufacturing cement blocks from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

The cement dust and other particles, and the loud noise of the machinery have become intolerable.

The frequent movement of heavy vehicles adds to the problem.

Senior citizens, children, and women are the main victims of the health hazards such as irritability in the eyes, respiratory problems, restlessness, and so on caused by the pollution.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board should look into the matter and see that remedial action is taken at the earliest.

Bird menace

Sir, — This refers to the proposed international airport at Devanahalli in Bangalore. There are nearly half-a-dozen livestock farms in a radius of about 35 km. from the land on which the airport is coming up. Disposal of carcasses from these farms should be done in such a manner that crows, vultures, and other birds do not pose a danger to aircraft. Migratory birds come to roost at the tanks near the land, and they can also pose a danger.

DA merger

Sir, — The Union Government has announced the merger of 50 per cent of the dearness allowance of its employees with their basic pay. However, the Government has not considered merger of 50 per cent of the dearness relief of pensioners with their basic pension. The Union Finance Ministry is requested to consider the merger in view of the plight of the pensioners.
