U.P., A.P. share day's honours

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, FEB. 29. As expected, the Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh boys shared the honours on the second day of the 44th junior National gymnastics championship at the Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Educational Institutions grounds here on Sunday.

The grand boy of the competition, Rohit Jaiswal, who brought home the silver in the Asian championship in China late last year, went through his routine exercises with characteristic flair.

The 16-year-old from Uttar Pradesh came up with a solid performance on the floor and followed it up with a much stronger show on the pommel horse and the Roman rings. He averaged 9.25 in the three events that he had completed and waited anxiously to prove his mettle in his favourite event, the horizontal bar.

Abhay Chand and Alok Ranjan, both from Uttar Pradesh, started their campaign in style with similar performances. The duo never really did strain their muscles and preferred to reserve all their energy for the optional round scheduled for the morrow.

"I am confident about the performance of our gymnasts. They have a good amount of international exposure and that's one reason I am sitting pretty relaxed," said D.K. Rathore, senior coach of the U.P. team.

The top shots of Andhra Pradesh, Satish Reddy, E. Chandrakanth Rao and Rajeskar Reddy did likewise. Many watched the performance of the U.P. boys carefully so as to plan their strategy to pull off a surprise or two against their rivals in the final round.

Earlier in the day, the Indian team selection trial for the Russian tour in July was held in which 23 boys and 12 girls took part. There is a possibility that only four from each group may find place in the team.
