NEW DELHI, FEB. 29. The President, A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, is learnt to have cancelled his programme in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, on March 2, in view of the Model Code of Conduct coming into force from today. Mr. Kalam was to inaugurate new facilities at a private hospital in the town. The President may take a decision to attend only purely academic programmes and undertake visits to educational institutions till the code remains in force. Mr. Kalam is understood to have taken the view that it would not be proper to allow his programmes to be used by any political party at a time when the schedule for the polls has been announced. As his programmes invariably attract the presence of chief ministers and ministers, the platform could be used by them to make all kinds of announcements. Though the code of conduct does not apply to the President, it is learnt that Mr. Kalam may accept invitations only for programmes which are purely of academic nature and do not come within the ambit of provisions of the code directly or indirectly.
