JD (U) climbs down on seats

RANCHI, FEB. 29. The Janata Dal (U), a partner in the NDA Government in Jharkhand, today climbed down from its demand for four Lok Sabha seats and said it was prepared to negotiate the figure.

``We have been demanding four Lok Sabha seats as the ratio of our party's representation in the State Assembly is 1:4, which is almost similar to that of BJP,'' the newly appointed JD (U) state president, Goutam Sagar Rana, told PTI. ``Therefore we had demanded four seats ... But it is negotiable and the demand may be reduced to two or three seats.''

However, he said he expected BJP to consider its demand keeping in mind the contribution made by party leaders George Fernandes, Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav in the NDA's `feel good' factor.

Mr. Rana said he would lead a delegation comprising party leaders Madhu Singh, Lalchand Mahto and Ram Chandra Kesari to discuss the matter with the party's leadership in Delhi.

The JD (U) had reacted sharply after senior BJP leaders from the State, Yashwant Sinha and Babulal Marandi, said the party would contest all the 14 Lok Sabha seats as it had 11 seats in the dissolved House and had finished second the rest.
