CHENNAI, FEB. 29. A transplantation procedure that will help patients with renal failure to receive kidneys from unmatched donors has been implemented by a team of city doctors. The procedure, `Splenic Radiation and Plasmapheresis,' enables patients with renal failure to accept kidneys from donors whose blood group does not match. "Through this technique we temporarily blind the function of the spleen that otherwise rejects the kidney from a high risk donor," P. Ravichandran, head, Nephrology and Transplantation, Kidney Disease and Institute of Organ Transplantation, and a member of the team, said at a press conference here on Friday. "The procedure also helps remove the antibodies that can lead to recurrence of renal failure. Ever since we introduced the technique in the year 2000, we have successfully done transplantation on 48 patients," he said. Though some doctors differed with this claim, maintaining that no transplantation can assure cent per cent success `as there are multiple pathways for the rejection of a high risk donors kidney,' they admitted that `the procedure could be useful on certain patients depending on the type and level of antibodies present in them.' According to Dr. Ravichandran, the procedure requires a multi-institutional and multi-speciality approach, "It cannot be performed in a hospital without the requisite infrastructure. We also need the assistance of specialists to conduct the procedure." Apart from Dr. Ravichandran, the comprised Sekar, radiation oncologist of the Apollo Cancer Hospital; Deepak Lamech, urologist, and L. Srinivasan Transplant and Vascular surgeon of the Bharathi Rajaa Hospital.
