By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 29. A tense situation prevailed for several hours at the Kottapuram beach in the Vizhinjam police station limits this evening following a clash between two groups of the same community. As many as seven persons sustained injuries in heavy stone pelting.

The incident was triggered by a scuffle between two boys, which led to an altercation between their families. Even as the Vicar of the local church was trying to mediate a settlement, about 300 people including women gathered on the beach and started pelting stones at each other. The arrival of the police failed to deter the warring groups.

With the violence threatening to get out of hand, police reinforcements from the city were rushed to the spot. The police force battled for over an hour to disperse the rival groups.

The City Police Commissioner, Rajan Singh, who was camping in the area late in the night said the situation had been brought under control. A heavy police posse has been posted to prevent any untoward incident in the communally sensitive area.
