Naming typhoons

HONG KONG, MARCH 2. Perhaps showing that scientists can be superstitious too, meteorologists who name typhoons in the Asia-Pacific region are taking action to avoid a repeat of some awful ones.

"The names are being replaced because they turned out to be bad," said a Hong Kong Observatory spokeswoman.

Typhoons are christened according to a rotation of 140 words from regional languages. Most are named after flowers, animals, birds, trees and items of food. — AP
