MUMBAI, MARCH 2. United Phosphorus (UPL), largest producer of crop protection products, has signed an agreement to acquire Lenacil (original investor Dupont) and Chloridazon (original inventor BASF) registration from Agricola for the U.K., France and Italy. The market size of these products is about 100 million euros and the target crops are sugarbeet, fruit and vegetable. These products would strengthen the range of sugar beet herbicides and would put the company into a leading position in this segment of the market. Apart from exploiting the current registrations in France, the U.K. and Italy, the company would look at seeking registrations in other EU countries and defend these products in EU review.
Buys stake in
Cropserve
In a separate development, UPL has also acquired a 20 per cent stake in Cropserve, a company based in South Africa. With this investment, both UPL and Cropserve stand to gain a reasonable market share in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique and consolidate their position in the region. Cropserve has a distribution company based in South Africa and has a good reach in the South African markets.
