Letters to the Editor
Sir, Indian democracy is in the right hands. First, the Election Commission imposed restrictions on undue Government publicity in the media. Now, the Delhi High Court has directed the Commission to publicise the information provided by the candidates about their financial liabilities to banks or dues to be paid for the use of public utilities. The voters must exercise their franchise conscientiously and cleanse the system. K. Malikul Azeez, Chennai * * * Sir, The High Court's observation that "an informed voter is the foundation of democracy" is full of substance. The correct picture of the candidates, furnished at the time of filing nominations, will help the voters elect upright men/women to represent them. K.S. Thampi, Chennai * * * Sir, The "landmark judgment" will go a long way in ensuring that only those with the right track record and image are elected. The Judiciary is indeed shining. P.K. Varadarajan, Chennai * * * Sir, Now that the Delhi High Court has directed the Election Commission to publicise candidates' dues to public utilities, I feel really good. Col (retd.) C.V. Venugopalan, Palakkad, Kerala * * * Sir, The departments concerned should have been directed to issue notice to the political parties to which defaulters belong to clear the dues on their behalf. In the event of non-compliance, the Commission should derecognise them. R. Muralikumar, Chennai * * * Sir, The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's cancelling his Guntur visit in spite of the fact that the model code of conduct does not apply to the President is a lesson for all political parties. Sangavi Gururaghavendran, Bangalore
