BANGALORE, MARCH 2. The political and community leaders who attended a meeting of Brahmins here on Tuesday asked them to vote in order to get political attention in future. They pointed out that only a few Brahmins voted. This had brought the community a bad name. They were speaking at a meeting on "political awareness" organised by the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha. The President of the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), H.N. Ananth Kumar, the former Minister, Harnahalli Ramaswamy, and the President of the Mahasabha, B.N.V. Subramanya, urged Brahmins to turn up in good numbers for voting. Mr. Ananath Kumar said Brahmins were yet to get due political representation. His party would do its bit in this direction. "But you have to make good use of the opportunities. You should exhibit your political might through the ballot box," he said. Mr. Ramaswamy said 70 per cent of the Brahmins did not vote. "Politicians will come to you only if you show them that you do vote," he said. Brahmin leaders, who were elected by non-Brahmins, kept away from the community in the name of social justice, he said. Mr. Subramanya, who urged Brahims to ensure 100 per cent voting in the elections, said the Mahasabha would soon come out with a report on the number of Brahmins living in every Assembly constituency in the State. The former Minister, S. Ramesh, the BJP Spokesman, S. Sureshkumar, the former MP, V.S. Krishna Iyer, the former Leader of the House in the Legislative Council, K.H. Srinivas, MLA Ramdas, MLCs Madhusudan and V.S.Acharya were present.
