Kidney surgery through key-hole procedure
By Our Special Correspondent
VISAKHAPATNAM,
MARCH 2.
J. Santhakumari (30), a lower middle-class housewife from Anakapalle, underwent an operation for removal of a kidney at Andhra Medical College (AMC) here on February 25. She is all smiles now because she has suffered less morbidity and could walk within two days of operation as against normal eight days. Reason? The doctors performed laparoscopic nephrectomy (removal of kidney through key-hole surgery) on her.
"This is the first time that such an operation has been performed in any of the Government teaching hospitals in the State,'' said a beaming Chodisetti Subba Rao, head of urology department in Andhra Medical College. This operation had also not been done in any of the corporate hospitals in the city.
Interestingly, the AMC doctors performed the operation with the help of borrowed equipment!
