BHIMAVARAM, MARCH. 2. Aqua farmers in West Godavari district are planning to switch over to white shrimp called `Penus Venami' from the common use of black shrimp, if the campaign of Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA) officials against the shrimp change is any indication. The demand for black shrimp was on the decline in the international market. There was growing demand for white shrimp which is said to be free from any foul smell by European countries United States of America, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and others. Subsequently, aqua farmers are now vying with each other to go in for white shrimp. However, experts say that cultivation of white shrimp is very expensive and reportedly spreads more diseases than the black shrimp. Penus Venami costs Rs. 40 per kg as against Rs. 25 per kg for normal shrimp, besides there is a fall in price from Rs. 300 to Rs. 260, according to MPEDA director, Subba Rao.
