COLOMBO, MARCH 2. An unidentified gunman shot dead a political activist opposed to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka's eastern Batticaloa district last night. Ponnaiah Yogendran (28), a member of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), was targeted in Valaichchenai, 32 km from Batticaloa town. The EPDP leader, Douglas Devananda, said in a statement that Yogendran was "under severe threat" from the LTTE. However, an LTTE functionary in the east denied the involvement of his group. In another incident, a bomb exploded in a school in the northern Mannar district this evening, damaging the roof of the building. The former Vanni MP, Selvam Adaikkalanathan, suspected the role of "disruptive elements" who wanted to instil a sense of fear among the Tamils and prevent them from voting in the April 2 elections, the TamilNet website said.
