IMPHAL, MARCH 2. A mentally-challenged youth today kept security personnel guarding the residence of the Manipur Speaker, T.N. Haokip, on their toes. Following the threat posed by the Nagaland underground organisation — NSCN(I-M) — security measures for Mr. Haokip had been beefed up on an unprecedented scale. At 12.30 p.m., the youth came near the gate and tried to snatch an automatic gun. After learning that he was mentally-challenged, police whisked him away. In another incident, personnel of 12 Assam Rifles gunned down an alleged insurgent in an "encounter" today at Nongpok Sanjembam. One 9 mm pistol, one hand grenade and one wireless set were found in his possession.
