Help Govt. in rehabilitation of child labour, local bodies told

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, MARCH 2. The role of panchayat heads in successful implementation of government programmes for eradication and rehabilitation of the child labour has been stressed.

Speaking at a workshop for creating awareness among chairmen and staff of panchayat unions organised by the Child Labour Effective Elimination and Rehabilitation Society (CHEERS) at Lalgudi near here recently, Santhosh Babu, Additional Commissioner of Labour (child labour) and member secretary Child Labour Rehabilitation-cum-Welfare Society, said the Government had prepared an action plan for total eradication of the child labour from the State by 2007 and launched various programmes in this regard.

By creating an awareness and implementing labour laws strictly, the child labour menace could be eliminated. Poverty in rural areas was attributed for the prevalence of the child labour. So, the Government was forming self-help groups exclusively for parents of child labourers. Over 1,000 groups have so far been formed in the State to improve their economic condition.

All the programmes would be implemented with the total involvement of local body heads, Dr. Santhosh Babu said and called upon the participants to lend a helping hand to the Government in making Tamil Nadu a child labour free State.

The Lalgudi MLA, S. M. Balan, and the Project Officer (in-charge), Mahalir Thittam, C. Sam Devadoss, spoke. The Project Officer, CHEERS, Jaisee Swetha, in her report, explained the steps taken for identification of the child labour free blocks in the district.

The participants were involved in group discussions and the Deputy Director of Adult and Continuing Education of the Bharathidasan University, Jayapaul, Inspectors of Labour, Solai Muthu and R. Deivanayagam acted as resource persons.
