CPI office attacked

By Our Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD, MARCH 2. The branch committee office of the CPI at Puthiyakandath, near Madikkai, was attacked by a group of men, allegedly DYFI supporters, on Monday night.

This comes just after the attack on SNDP workers, allegedly by CPI(M) activists, at Bengalam and at Cheyyath, near here on Sunday night. The SNDP Bengalam unit secretary, Damodharan, and two others were injured in the attack and were hospitalised. The police had arrested 20 CPI(M) workers in connection with the two incidents.

According to sources, the injured SNDP workers were taken to a hospital by CPI supporters. The attack on the CPI office was to `protest' against this, said the sources.

Bengalam, where clashes between the SNDP and the CPI(M) were frequent, had been peaceful for some time following an understanding reached between the SNDP and the CPI(M) leadership a few months ago. However, the latest incident has disturbed the equation.

Meanwhile, a peace committee has been formed to prevent the tension from escalating.

The Kottappuram area had been tense after CPI(M) activists were attacked, allegedly by BJP activists, late on Saturday night. The police had to resort to a lathicharge and fire plastic pellets in the air to disburse a BJP-led mob that tried to obstructed the police. The police have arrested three BJP workers and registered a case in this connection.
