Senior BSP leader expelled

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 2. Senior Bahujan Samaj Party leader and former MP, Rashid Alvi, was expelled from the party hours after accusing the party chief, Mayawati, of "auctioning" the ticket for the coming Lok Sabha elections. The expulsion was announced by a party functionary in Lucknow.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Alvi had levelled several charges against the BSP chief at a press conference.

He said she was acting at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party to weaken the secular front and should apologise for campaigning for Narendra Modi during the Gujarat elections.

The former MP from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh claimed: "The whole world knows that the ticket is going to the highest bidder. She is under the control of the BJP and is doing everything possible to help it by dividing the secular vote."

According to Mr. Alvi, she had in mind the corruption cases pending against her and by distancing herself from the secular front she was keeping the option open of supporting the BJP in the post-poll scenario.

"Instead of working to strengthen the secular forces, she is helping the NDA."

He alleged that she was `polluting' the system by allotting ticket to people without any political background.
