BJP to go it alone in Northeast

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI, MARCH 2. The BJP today announced that it would go it alone in the northeast and virtually ditched the Sangma faction of the NCP by conceding it just one seat in Meghalaya.

The BJP vice-president, Pyarelal Khandelwal, told reporters here that the party would contest the two seats each in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

The lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram has been allotted to the ruling MNF.

In Tripura, it would contest one seat and Mr. Khandelwal did not name the party to which the other seat would go.

In Assam it will contest 14 seats and has allotted the Bodo-dominated Kokrajhar seat to its ally BDLP (Bodoland Demand Legislature Party).

In Meghalaya the BJP will contest the Shillong seat, leaving Mr. Sangma's home constituency, Tura, to the NCP.

No decision has yet been taken on Nagaland that has two seats.

The Assam NCP president, Bhrigu Phukan, told The Hindu that his party would not accept such a ``unilateral'' decision.

Observers feel that the setback suffered by Mr. Sangma in the recent Autonomous Hill District Council elections in Meghalaya had eroded his bargaining power.
