Drive to issue identity cards for voters launched in Mysore

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, MARCH. 2. There is a marginal increase in the number of voters in Mysore district with 38,560 new voters as on January 1, 2004.

According to the revised draft rolls, the number of voters in the district is 19,01,483 against 18,62,923 who were eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections held in 1999.

However, the total number of voters in the district will differ from that of Mysore parliamentary constituency.

This is because three of the Assembly segments, which are in Mysore revenue division, are part of Chamajarajanagar parliamentary constituency.

They are T. Narsipura, Nanjangud, and Bannur.

The Mysore parliamentary constituency includes eight Assembly segments — Krishnaraja, Chamaraja, Narasimharaja, Chamundeshwari, H.D. Kote, Hunsur, K.R. Nagar, and Periyapatna. The number of voters in Chamundeshwari is 3,21,314 against 3,09,466 registered in 1999. In Krishnaraja, there are 1,04,637 voters against 1,01,738 registered in 1999; 1,53,028 in Chamaraja against 1,50,401 registered in 1999; and 2,13,575 in Narasimharaja against 2,06,732 of 1999.

The number of voters in H.D. Kote is 1,69,569, 1,82,663 in Hunsur, 1,53,085 in K.R. Nagar, and 1,75,268 in Periyapatana. However, official sources said these figures were valid as on January 1, 2004 and there would be a change in the number of voters for the coming elections.

The authorities have launched a drive to issue identity cards for voters. In Krishnaraja, Narasimharaja, and Chamaraja Assembly segments, 2.11 lakh voters are yet to receive identity cards. A total of 42,000 voters are yet to receive identity cards in Krishnaraja, 71,000 in Chamaraja, and 98,000 in Narasimharaja. The drive will continue till March 10.
