Nellore
By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, MARCH 2. The Congress party is gearing up for the election battle in the district and seems to be gratified by the recent electoral understanding between the party and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS). The former MLA, Anam Vivekananda Reddy, who represented Nellore town, maintained that he took a lot of interest in beefing up civic amenities, taking advantage of being the municipal chairman of Nellore earlier. He alleged that the present civic body controlled by the Telugu Desam Party had failed to live up to the expectations of people and he took up the issue of allocation of funds with the State Government and ensured their release, despite being in the Opposition. Similarly, the party fought against the abrupt hike in municipal taxes and courted arrest several times. With regard to roads, Mr. Reddy contended that it was only due to the continuous campaign by the Congress party that Nellore town had at least basic infrastructure, compared with poor roads earlier. Similarly, the party led by him opposed the hike in power charges and took up all issues concerning people's welfare. He also recalled how the Congress exposed the bungling in the installation of electronic timers in Nellore, which ultimately led to the shelving of the proposal all over the State. The party also strived for the fly-over near Atmakur bus stand and for the construction of the box-type bridge near Vijayamahal railway gate. Mr. Reddy defended the accord between TRS and Congress and was hopeful that the alliance would bag a minimum of 200 seats in the Assembly.
