Temple consecration from March 13

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, MARCH 2. The renovated Sri Janardhan Temple, Vittlabettu, Kolambe in Mangalore taluk will be formally consecrated during a six-day religious festivities beginning from March 13. The Nagapratishte, Brahmakalashabhisheka and Prasanna puja to Lord Janardhan will be held on March 13. A religious function will be held following the festivities to mark the occasion.

The working president of Sri Janardhan Temple Renovation Committee, Jagesh Shetty, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the 900-year-old temple was set up by the erstwhile Jain rulers of the area. The temple became the focal point of local religious aspiration after the regal patronage ended. Noting that the once splendid religious edifice had fallen into a state of disrepair, he said the renovation committee took up the task of putting the temple back to its original splendour at an estimated cost of Rs. 26 lakhs.

Mr. Shetty said the main gopuram of temple had collapsed, posing a danger to the sanctum sanctorum. The local people organised a Sri Satyanarayana Puja for its renovation and even shared costs involved in its conduct as well as the mass feeding. The amount collected was deposited in a bank. The committee raised Rs. 4 lakhs for the project.

The Bramhakalashbhisheka programme initially scheduled in November last was deferred following assurances given by the Minister for Transport and district in-charge, B. Ramanath Rai, that he would provide official assistance from the Department of Religious Endowment as per norms, he said. Bhajans would be organised as part of the festivities.

The seer of Sri Subramanya Math, Vidyaprasanna Thirta, would deliver benedictions at the religious function on March 18. Sri Niranjana Swami of Sri Ambika Annapoorneshwari Temple, Sunkadakatte, would attend the function. Mr. Rai would preside over the function, he added.
