dated March 4, 1954: Western music

Mr. Michael Thomas Mann, American violist, speaking at a meeting held at Ranade Hall, Mylapore, Madras, on March 2, under the auspices of the Madras Music Academy, explained certain new trends in Western instrumental music. He gave a demonstration on the viola and also played some gramophone records to illustrate his points. The melodic system in the East, Mr. Mann said, was much more elaborate than that of the West. The element of improvisation was important in Western music, but this became more and more rare, when the system became complicated and the harmonic system also became complicated. Music then became more scientific and less spontaneous. After a systematic exploitation of all the harmonic combinations, progress of music, it was felt, especially after the First World War, had come to a standstill. Composers had begun to experiment in new ways because the old ways had been exhausted.
